Despite the convenience that paying for bills via direct debit may provide, it is not a reason for Britons to be complacent when it comes to keeping track of their money management, new research suggests.

In a study carried out by moneysupermarket, it was revealed that such a payment system is becoming increasingly popular among many consumers. At present it was revealed that a quarter of credit card bills are paid using direct debit, with this proportion rising to 48 per cent for gas bills. Meanwhile, 63 and 54 per cent of demands for payment on landline telephone and electricity bills respectively are met this way.

Research from the price comparison site also revealed that 17 per cent of consumers have uncovered an error on their bill during the past three months, while over the last year about one in three have discovered that they have been incorrectly charged. Overall, it was indicated that around eight million people were overcharged in the last quarter. Moneysupermarket went on to assert that at “a time when household budgets are being squeezed more than ever, the last thing Brits need is to be landed with an incorrect bill”. In spite of this however, it was shown that half of respondents claim that they do not check every bill that they receive.

Indeed, following on from being charged more money than they should have been for bills, it is possible that consumers could find that they develop greater problems in managing various demands on their spending. Such areas could well include personal loans, credit and store cards and mortgage repayments.

Commenting on the figures, Rob Barnes, head of broadband and mobiles for moneysupermarket, said: “The staggering amount of people who’ve been hit with an incorrect bill only goes to show how inadequate some providers can be. Consumers are already facing increased living costs, the last thing they need is to be charged for something they never had. Worryingly there are millions of people who still don’t check their bills, meaning they could be paying over the odds for a service they have never received. If you don’t check all your bills you’re leaving yourselves open to being taken advantage of.”

Mr Barnes went on to report that it is particularly important for consumers on direct debit to check every statement that they receive. He added: “If payments are made automatically against incorrectly charged bills, suppliers are raking in millions of extra pounds.”

However, those who choose not to adopt direct debit appear to be more cautious with managing their money. A third of such consumers believe that direct debits limit their ability to control their spending, with one in ten not trusting companies to charge them the right amount. Meanwhile, women were shown to be keeping a more cautious eye over their finances than men.

For those consumers finding that they are struggling to keep up with various demands on their spending, a debt consolidation loan might be advised. By doing so, it is possible that borrowers can merge numerous financial constraints, such as household bills, council tax and credit cards, into a single low-cost monthly repayment. A debt consolidation loan might be of additional help for Britons after a recent uSwitch study showed that by opting to receive bills via email rather than postal mail consumers could save 162 million pounds a year. Overall, it was stated that switching payment methods could generate annual savings of 237 million pounds.

Believe it or not, your local electric company actually wants you to save money. They are introducing new ways to lower electric bills with consumer incentives and smart technologies. You can be rewarded for your conservation efforts in tangible ways on your way to living green and protecting the planet, while increasing the money in your pocket.

To learn how the electric company can help you to lower electric bills and how you can help yourself lower electric bills, consider the following:

Utility programs that can lower electric bills:

Smart grids and smart meters.
Around the country, power grids are becoming smarter with technological advances that prevent outages and other issues through the informed participation of consumers. Smart home meters, which are now beginning to replace the traditional, lower-tech models, incorporate sophisticated communication capabilities to help homeowners make an immediate connection between the power they’re using and the price they’re paying. Some utilities offer other helpful real-time communications with customers, such as phone or e-mail messaging in advance of peak use or pricing periods and in-home monitors that help track rate changes and oncoming grid overloads. Pricing incentives.
Many electrical utilities help homeowners power down throughout the grids busiest times of day with pricing plans that reward use during off-peak hours. Rebates for energy-saving appliances and home upgrades.
Your local utility likely has an extensive menu of rebates for purchases that help trim your power and green up your home. Offers apply to everything from individual appliances to bigger home improvements like roofing and insulation installations, so consult your utility to find out how you can compound the value of choices you make for your home. Online calculators and other tools.
Electrical utilities also help you steer toward smarter usage with online resources like energy savings calculators, buyers guides and tip sheets.

Do-it-yourself energy saving tips that can lower electric bills:

Add your own power monitor.
While you wait for your local grid to get smarter and a new meter to be installed at your home base, take steps to monitor your family’s utility use with products made for the task. Energy monitors such as Black Decker’s Power Monitor are simple to install and work with your current electrical meter to provide real-time information on energy use and costs with an easy-to-program, easy-to-read tabletop display. You can also find monitors that individually test appliances for consumption, efficiency and waste so you know exactly where your energy dollars are going each month and where use can be reduced with more efficient replacements. Know local rates.
Knowledge is indeed power, and you can’t brighten your energy conservation picture if you’re in the dark regarding local rates and schedules. As mentioned above, most utilities guard the grid and offer savings to customers with incentivized pricing throughout the seasons, so even the most general knowledge of the ups, downs and opportunities they offer can lower electric bills. Track your power usage.
When your monthly electric bill arrives, look beyond the immediate balance to your usage history. Many utility bills include a chart or graph that illustrates the customer’s consumption month-to-month and year-to-year. Use these simple tools to project use for upcoming seasons and to assess how and why you might be using more (or, hopefully, less) electricity than at the same time last year. Power up for a change of residence.
If you’re shopping for a home of a different size or in a different area, it doesn’t hurt to review the current owner’s utility bills from the past few years. Your personal use and costs will likely vary for the same property, but you’ll at least have a basic picture of dollars spent and the number of kilowatt-hours of energy consumed there on a monthly basis. To lower electric bills even further, consider possible improvements and appliances to bring with you for the move.

With ever increasing fuel bills, it’s good to know that there are a number of ways by which you can get some help.

Most benefits come through eligibility to one, or more of the state benefits, such as Income Support, Disability Living Allowance, Housing Benefit, or Jobseeker’s Allowance. And various fuel grants and schemes are available from the government backed initiatives which come under the umbrella title of the Home Energy Efficiency Scheme and include such names as Warm Front, Warm Deal and Warm Homes.

And help can also come from your energy company, like British Gas, which has devised a number of products and schemes to reduce the pain of rising fuel bills.

Brought together under their Essentials Advance package, British Gas works with its qualifying customers to not only help with bill payments, but also to pro-actively help them save energy.

The Essentials Advance package includes advice on energy efficiency, free insulation (which could help you save well over £250 off future bills) and a discount of £50 off your next bill, after your free insulation has been provided.

To be considered for Essentials Advance, you need to be an existing British Gas customer and receive any following:

Disability living allowance
Pension credit
Attendance allowance
Council tax benefit
Housing benefit
Income support
Income based job seeker allowance
War disablement pension (which includes either mobility supplement or constant attendance allowance)
Disablement pension ( which includes constant attendance allowance)
Child Tax credit (where relevant income is £15,592 or less)
Working Tax credit (where relevant income is £15, 592 or less).

If you think you are eligible, British Gas have a network of energy experts who will come around and visit you, talking you through the various schemes and plans that exist to help.

They can be reached via the telephone on 0800 072 7100.

They also provide help with debt support, recommend charities that also help and suggest other home energy plans.

But if you are having a problem with your British Gas bill, do call them on 0800 048 0404 and talk it through with specialist advisers.

British Gas also has established an independent charity, the British Gas Energy Trust, which offers existing customers help via grants and Further Assistance Payments.

For further information, visit: www.britishgasenergytrust.org.uk.

British Gas also has links with six other charities and regularly liaise on how to help people with their fuel bills. They also offer a ‘here to HELP’ programme which offers free, or subsidised insulation, and other key advice, via four of their charity partners, namely Help the Aged, Scope, RNIB and Money Advice Trust. More information can be obtained by telephoning 0845 605 2535.

Furthermore, the British Gas Home Energy Care Team provides help and advice for over half a million of its most vulnerable customers, including providing bills in alternative formats, gas safety checks and appliance controls that are specially adapted for older, ill, or disabled customers. Call 0845 955 5404 for more information.

And if English is not your native language, then British Gas can discuss your bill in a number of other languages, including Polish, Somali, Urdu, Turkish, Bengali and Punjabi.

All this is one very good reason to make sure British Gas is your energy provider.

With the price of gas seemingly going up by the day, motoring is becoming an expensive pastime. What you may not know, however, is that you can cut the cost of gas with the help of a credit card. Any old card won’t do, though. What you need is a gas rebate credit card.

As the name suggests, these cards repay a portion of your total spending on gas. The proportion is typically 4 or 5 per cent, though some cards offer higher percentages (up to 10 per cent) during the introductory period. The money will normally be credited to your account by the end of the month concerned, though you may have to wait until you have accrued a certain amount – say $20 – before you can redeem it.

Many gas rebate credit cards offer rebates only for certain brands, and some can only be used at specific locations. This is excellent for people who regularly use the same gas station to fill up, but may not be so good if you are the sort of person who likes to shop around for the cheapest fuel, or if your job regularly takes you many miles from home. Likewise, if you are running low on gas, looking for somewhere that will accept your particular credit card can be tedious. Fortunately, however, there is a growing number of cards that can be used at any outlet, with any brand of gas.

Another advantage of gas rebate credit cards is that they will often give you cashback on your other purchases as well, albeit at a lower rate. For example, you might get 5 per cent cashback on your gas purchases, and 1 per cent on any other purchases made with the card.

Gas rebate credit cards are becoming increasingly popular with drivers who want to reduce their motoring costs. This is especially true if you drive a truck or SUV with high fuel consumption, or if your job involves a lot of driving.

Most card issuers pay back the customer in the form of a credit to their account, but some offer gift certificates or other rewards. In some cases you are given a choice. The rewards on offer will have a greater monetary value than the cash rebate, so if you genuinely need the items concerned you may be better off accepting the rewards.

Finally, it’s important to shop around before you buy a gas rebate credit card and read the small print carefully. Work out your typical annual spend on gas, and then see which card’s terms will offer the most advantageous deal for you. One thing to watch for is that many cards impose an upper limit for the top rate of cashback. The Discover® Platinum Gas Card, for example, pays back 5% on your first $1,200 in gas purchases every year, but after that the rate falls to a less exciting 0.25 to 0.50 per cent.
